Ek'Balam
In many South American traditions, Ek' Balam, the jaguar god, was revered for its strength and bravery—fearless in the face of danger and unwavering against its enemies. It is also seen as a symbol of transformation, shapeshifting, and reinvention. As the king of the Underworld, its spirit was believed to guide people from darkness into light, embodying prescience and the ability to foresee what lies ahead.
I began this collection in 2020, during the height of lockdown, when the fragility of the natural world became impossible to ignore.
Today, the jaguar is critically endangered, teetering on the brink of extinction. In our lifetime, it may become nothing more than myth, a fading dream. In this series, jaguar gods exude a quiet yet commanding presence, standing amidst the stark, graphic icons of modernity. Many believe jaguar energy has the power to transform negativity into positivity—an enduring emblem of hope for our times.
